There are 8 species of pelicans belonging to the genus Pelecanus that are most easily recognized by their long, pointed beaks and throat pouch. In Florida, brown pelicans are, by far, the most widespread and most well known. Using their throat pouch, called a gular, they will “plunge-dive” into the water scooping up surface dwelling baitfish like sardines and anchovies.
